Southampton ace Rickie Lambert is an injury concern as Peter Reid manages Plymouth for the first time.

Lambert concern for Saints, debuts in store for Pilgrims

Southampton ace Rickie Lambert is one of a host of injury concerns for the opening-day League One clash at home to Plymouth Argyle. The striker, who thumped 37 goals last term, has been struggling with a groin injury during pre-season and will be handed a late fitness check. Winger Jason Puncheon is doubtful with an ankle injury, midfielder Adam Lallana has a knee problem and Morgan Schneiderlin, Dan Seabourne, Joseph Mills and Lee Holmes are all carrying knocks. Manager Alan Pardew will definitely be without new signing Frazer Richardson after the defender suffered a dislocated shoulder. Danny Butterfield will instead make his debut at right-back with a third summer recruit, Ryan Dickson, starting on the left. Youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has figured regularly in pre-season and could be involved.

    Plymouth news

Plymouth boss Peter Reid has added to his defensive options for the trip to Southampton by signing Lee Molyneux. The left-back - a former Saints player - has been on trial at Home Park and was snapped up on Thursday after proving his fitness. Molyneux, 21, could go straight into the squad with Onismor Bhasera pressed into action further up-field in a wide-left berth. Bhasera has been courting transfer interest from a host of Championship clubs but Reid has rejected any offers for the highly-rated Zimbabwean. Loan recruit David Button will tussle with Romain Larrieu for the No.1 spot after the keeper sealed a loan switch from Tottenham. Defender Yannick Bolasie is a doubt after damaging his ankle during pre-season.
