Saints v Sheff Wed preview

Image: Ifil: Out for two weeks

Southampton are missing Phil Ifil for the visit of Sheff Wed, who will give fitness tests to two defenders.

More problems for Saints boss Burley

Southampton are missing Phil Ifil for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday, who will give fitness tests to two defenders. Ifil, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, picked up an ankle injury in Saturday's win at Leicester and is likely to be out for at least a fortnight. He joins fellow defenders Alexander Ostlund (hamstring), Darren Powell (calf), Wayne Thomas (Achilles), Claus Lundekvam (ankle) and Chris Makin (hip) on the sidelines, while makeshift centre-half Jhon Viafara is also struggling with a neck injury. Winger Nathan Dyer took a whack on the shin against the Foxes and will be given a late fitness check. Midfielder Inigo Idiakez is facing another couple of weeks on the sidelines after a scan showed a tear in his Achilles.

Owls news

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has concerns over Frankie Simek and on-loan Derby defender Michael Johnson. Johnson was forced to withdraw from the pre-match warm-up against Colchester on Saturday due to a back problem, while Simek will have a late fitness test on a knee strain. If Simek fails his late test Lee Bullen could step up from the substitutes' bench, while Mark Beevers should retain his place if Johnson is ruled out again. But Laws will be able to call on French midfielder Yoann Folly, who missed out on Saturday due to compassionate leave.
