Chester stun Southend in FA Cup

Non-League Conference outfit Chester deservedly saw off League Two Southend 2-1 at Roots Hall.

The visitors went in front after just five minutes when Ben Heneghan headed home a right wing free-kick from Peter Winn. Only a fine save from Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley then stopped Craig Hobson doubling Chester's lead as the striker's low, 18-yard shot was impressively pushed to safety. Southend hit back to equalise in the 31st minute when Barry Corr bagged his 50th goal for the club, firing home a well taken spot-kick. The penalty was awarded after John White was brought down by John Rooney and Corr made no mistake with a low effort which went into the bottom left hand corner of the net. However, Chester then almost retook the lead on the stroke of half-time when Rooney's low effort was cleared off the line by Gary Deegan. Chester were not to be denied though and, in the 51st minute, Craig Mahon cut in off the right flank to fire home from the edge of the penalty area and send his side into the second round.
