Walker stunner earns Pools point

Bradley Walker's second-half volley secured Hartlepool a 1-1 draw at play-off rivals Southend.

The Shrimpers went ahead just before the break when Barry Corr firing in from close range. But Pools levelled in the 59th minute, with Walker on target with a well-struck volley. Southend, who have now not won for six games, almost went in front when Anthony Straker headed a right-wing cross from John White against the underside of the crossbar. However, they took the lead in the 43rd minute when Corr impressively converted a low left-wing cross from Kevan Hurst with a near flick. Straker had a well-struck shot well saved by Scott Flinders at the start of the second half before Hartlepool equalised with Walker collecting a loose attempted clearance from Michael Timlin and netted with a volley from 20 yards. Southend pushed hard after being pegged back and almost went back in front when Hurst had a shot blocked on the line by full-back Darren Holden.
