Easton strike frustrates Wycombe

Image: Easton: From zero to hero

Craig Easton went from villain to hero as Southend clipped high-flying Wycombe's wings with a 3-2 victory at Roots Hall.

The Blues skipper conceded the penalty that levelled the scores at 2-2 before grabbing the winning goal a minute later. Wycombe broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Stuart Beavon passed into the box and Jon-Paul Pittman fired a right-footed shot into the bottom left-hand corner of Rhys Evans' goal from inside the box. Southend got level on terms in the 50th minute when Barry Corr headed home from six yards from Ryan Hall's corner. The goal lifted the home side and they grabbed a second in the 59th minute when Hall's centre was headed home by Kane Ferdinand - his first goal since breaking into the first team this season. The Blues should have made it 3-1 when they were awarded a penalty following Marvin McCoy's foul on Anthony Grant in the 79th minute, but Blair Sturrock's tame penalty was blocked by goalkeeper Nikki Bull. Wycombe rubbed salt into the wounds when Scott Rendell equalised from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after Easton handled Gareth Ainsworth's shot, but the Southend captain atoned straight away by latching onto Hall's free-kick and rifling a half-volley home from the edge of the box.
