Early double enough to secure Rovers' first win

Two goals in the first eight minutes secured an impressive 2-0 win for Bristol Rovers over Stockport at Edgeley Park. Rovers sold star striker Rickie Lambert to Southampton last week but showed no ill effects as they raced into a two-goal lead before seeing out their first win of the season. The visitors made a flying start as Darryl Duffy held the ball up before laying it across the County box and strike partner Jo Kuffour blazed over the bar. But the Pirates were soon in front, with Kuffour pouncing on a mix-up between County captain Michael Raynes and the on-rushing goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams to tap the ball into an empty net in just the third minute.

    Dominant start

Rovers continued their dominant start with Jeff Hughes forcing Williams into a good save at his near post but Danny Coles rose highest to head home from the resulting corner. The visitors had claims for penalty turned down after 12 minutes when Gianluca Havern appeared to handle the ball. County might have halved the deficit when Carl Baker's shot was defected wide with Fraser Forster rooted to the spot, and despite nine more County attempts, Forster was rarely troubled as the Pirates ran out comfortable winners.
