Tottenham eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over League Two Newport County at Wembley on Wednesday.
Newport were eight minutes away from knocking out Spurs in the original meeting at Rodney Parade 10 days ago, with a late Harry Kane equaliser forcing a replay.
But two goals in eight first-half minutes ensured there would be no upset at Wembley. Dan Butler diverted Moussa Sissoko's cross into his own net in the 24th minute and Erik Lamela then scored his first goal since September 2016 to set up victory for Spurs.
Tottenham: Vorm (6), Aurier (6), Alderweireld (6), Foyth (6), Rose (7), Wanyama (6), Winks (7), Sissoko (6), Lamela (7), Son (8), Llorente (5)
Subs: Eriksen (6), Alli (5), Walker-Peters (5)
Newport: Day (6), Pipe (5), White (6), Demetriou (6), Butler (6), Tozer (5), Bennett (6), Labadie (6), Willmott (6), Nouble (5), Amond (5)
Subs: Dolan (5), McCoulsky (5), O’Brien (5)
Man of the match: Heung-Min Son
Newport almost grabbed a late consolation in second-half injury-time but Padraig Amond was denied by Michel Vorm.
Mauricio Pochettino's side will face League One Rochdale in the next round on Sunday, February 18, before which they take on north London rivals Arsenal on Saturday and Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.
With 10 changes to the starting line-up, Spurs started slowly against Newport, who were backed by around 7,000 fans and put the hosts under pressure as they tried to play out from the back.
Although Spurs looked unsettled in the early stages, they soon got into the game and took the lead in the 26th minute in fortuitous fashion as Sissoko's cross deflected in off Butler.
The goal lifted Spurs and, after Joe Day saved twice in quick succession, Lamela made it 2-0 when he scored his first goal since September 2016, sliding a shot in from Heung-Min Son's pass.
Spurs finished the half on top and continued to dominate after the break, with Newport struggling to get out of their own half.
Only Son kept his place in the Spurs starting line-up as they made 10 changes, with Alderweireld, Rose and Winks all starting. Newport made three changes with Pipe, White and Bennett replacing Reid, O’Brien and Dolan.
The hosts had chances to extend their lead but Lamela was denied by Day and substitute Christian Eriksen shot wide after a slick passing move.
Fernando Llorente also twice missed the target from good positions inside the box and Dele Alli hit the bar after being played through. Newport nearly grabbed a late goal but Amond saw his shot saved by Vorm.
- Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 12 home games at Wembley (W10 D2), scoring 32 goals and conceding just six.
- Newport have won just one of their eight FA Cup away games against top-flight opposition (D1 L6).
- Spurs have kept clean sheets in each of their last four home games in all competitions, they last kept more consecutive shutouts on home soil in September 2013 (six).
- Mauricio Pochettino oversaw his 200th game for Tottenham in all competitions (W110 D47 L43).
- Tottenham have benefited from five opposition own goals this season in all competitions, more than any other English league side.
Man of the match - Heung-Min Son
Lamela and Son were Spurs' two standout performers, with both drifting across the pitch and linking up well. While Lamela grabbed a goal, Son looked to drive forward whenever he got the ball and caused the Newport defence plenty of problems.
Spurs are at home again on Saturday when they host north London rivals Arsenal. They then travel to Juventus next Tuesday for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.
Newport host Forest Green Rovers in League Two on Saturday and then go to Mansfield on Tuesday.
