WATCH: TOTTENHAM 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON
TOTTENHAM 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON
all over. Tottenham get back to winning ways as new Saints boss Ralph
Hasenhuttl watched on from the stands. After suffering a derby defeat to
Arsenal on Sunday, Spurs were in ruthless mood as Harry Kane (9), Lucas Moura
(51) and Son Heung-min (55) took advantage of some poor defending by Saints. Charlie Austin netted late as the visitors hit the woodwork three times in the game. Stay tuned for highlights.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON (Austin, 90+2)
That's more than deserved. Austin scampers in behind and gets the run on Foyth. He usually doesn't miss in these situations and he powers one into the top corner. Lovely.
TOTTENHAM 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON
90: Three minutes added on here.
87: SUB! Trippier hobbles off holding his hip. He's replaced by Skipp.
84: PENALTY APPEAL...NOT GIVEN! Spurs counter. Alli threads a ball through to the on-rushing Rose, who gets the wrong side of Ward-Prowse. He hits the deck but the referee, who has had a quiet night, says 'no pen'.
79: SUB! Eriksen replaced by Alli.
76: DOUBLE SAVE!! Hojbjerg finds space from about 20 yards and pings a low effort which is brilliantly saved by Lloris - he can only push it out to Ward-Prowse who from six yards out smacks it straight at Lloris. Brilliant goalkeeping.
ANOTHER SAVE!! Redmond gets to the byline and cuts one back for Austin. He finds space and reverses a cute shot towards the far corner which is tipped behind by Lloris. He will not be beaten!
74: SUB! Moura is replaced by Sissoko, who is now a crowd favourite.
72: CHANCE! Another opportunity for the visitors. Ward-Prowse sends in the latest brilliant delivery from the right and Austin and Stephens both go up from eight yards out but somehow the ball evades them both.
70: SUB! Austin enters the fray. Gabbiadini is replaced - not his greatest showing it has to be said.
67: CHANCE! Davis gets a lucky break off Rose and charges into the box. He could shoot but decides to cut the ball back for Ward-Prowse but the ball is a little behind him. The midfielder forces one towards goal but Trippier blocks it away.
WATCH: REDMOND HITS BAR
Credit Southampton, they've had a go since falling three down.
62: CHANCE!! Not sure how the visitors haven't scored there...Ward-Prowse whips a delightful ball in from the right and Yoshida and Gabbiadini charge in. They are only six yards out but somehow the ball ricochets straight to Lloris.
WATCH: SON MAKES IT THREE
Kane does the graft, Son provides the finish. Saints all over the show.
WATCH: MOURA FOR 2-0
Here's how Spurs doubled their lead.....
TOTTENHAM 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON
57: OFF THE BAR!! Saints strike the woodwork for the second time today. Redmond comes to life off the left and goes to bend one into the far corner. He catches it nicely but the ball bounces back off the frame. Unlucky.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON (Son, 55)
Hasenhuttl must be thinking what's he got himself into here - Southampton have crumbled.
Targett's attempted clearance is charged down by Kane and he has the freedom of Wembley to burst down the right. Can he find Son in the middle? Of course he can. It's on a plate for the South Korean, who turns it home from three yards.
"Nice one Sonny," chant the Spurs fans.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON (Moura, 51)
They came out after the break with real intent and they've got their reward. A corner finds it's way to Moura about 15 yards out. His first strike is blocked by Armstrong - perhaps with a hand - but it doesn't matter as Moura smacks the next attempt into the ground and into the far corner. Mountain for Southampton to climb now.
TOTTENHAM 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON
48: SAVE! Looks like Spurs want to end this game ASAP. A corner from the left is flicked on by Dier but McCarthy scampers back to claw the ball away from danger. Good goalkeeping.
46: HERE WE GO! Spurs kick off the second-half....
WATCH: HALF-TIME HIGHLIGHTS
Kane’s goal separates these two. Both teams have hit the woodwork but it’s been
low on intensity and quality so far. The atmosphere inside Wembley is flat too. To my left, Ralph Hasenhuttl heads back
into the warm for a half-time pie. He won’t be too disheartened by this
performance. They’ve asked questions of Spurs. See you in 15.
44: PRESSURE! Late rally from Spurs. Erilsen goes short from another corner and sends in a sensational ball that Stephens does well to clear inside his six-yard box.
41: SHOT! Eriksen has been quiet apart from his assist. He finds space in behind the Saints midfield and drives on...he attempts a low effort but McCarthy is well equal to it. Easy save.
39: The quality has dropped hugely in the last few minutes. Lots of misplaced passes from both teams. Ralph
Hasenhuttl will be quite happy from what he's seen of his team here. They've competed well.
36: Poor ball by Dier in midfield. Son makes a nice run in behind but the ball has far too much juice on. You get the feeling Southampton are quite happy to keep this to 1-0 for as long as possible.
32: SAVE! McCarthy called into action again. Son dances off the left and powers an effort at goal from 20 yards. It's straight at the goalkeeper put he has to be alert to help it over the crossbar.
30: SAVE! Super break from Son, who moves it to Kane inside the area. He goes for a cute finish into the far corner but it's too close to McCarthy - he gets down quickly and holds on.
WATCH: LLORIS SAVE!
Make sure you watch this save from Hugo Lloris. World class.
26: OFF THE POST!! Hojbjerg nearly breaks the woodwork in two! There doesn't look much danger on as the ball drops to him 30 yards out but he pings a strike that thumps towards goal....Lloris is at full-stretch and somehow gets a hand to it which diverts it onto the post. Amazing strike. Amazing save.
24: You can't give that man a sniff. Spurs dominating the ball now as Saints drop that little bit deeper.
OFFSIDE! Moura flicks a ball to Kane who sends a pulsating volley into the top corner! But Moura was a yard offside. Sublime finish though.
21: Spurs hunting a second here - they look dangerous every time they venture into the box. Moura finds Dier on the left edge - his reverse cross for Kane is hooked clear by Yoshida.
18: AMBITIOUS! Spurs are playing on the counter here. Dier nicks the ball in midfield and finds Moura on the break. He has space to run into but tries to catch McCarthy off his line from 50 yards. No chance. McCarthy jogs back to make an easy take.
14: Saints enjoy a period of possession but it's far too slow and obvious. Spurs are pushing their backline very high to squeeze them.
OFFSIDE!! Gabbiadini does get played in behind by Armstrong and then flicks it back to his mate, who is only 12 yards out. However, the linesman flag goes up. Apparently, the striker was just off. Close call.
WATCH: HARRY KANE SCORES GOALS
It's 1-0 to the Spurs.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON (Kane, 9)
Ouch for Saints - it's that man again.
Tottenham work a corner short to Eriksen. What a clever player he is. Instead of sending in a high cross he spots the run of Kane and fires one in low towards the near post. Saints are asleep and Kane nips in. He doesn't miss from six-yards out.
WATCH: SON HITS POST
Cracking effort from Son - unlucky.
TOTTENHAM 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON
6: WIDE! Saints respond. Nice play from Redmond leads to Cedric finding space on the right. He's full of confidence after his goal on Saturday and strikes a low effort from 22 yards which whistles past the far post.
TOTTENHAM 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON
4: OFF THE POST!! Well, that was easy. Spurs burst into life. Trippier flicks the ball into the path of Son inside the area and he crashes a low half-volley that beats McCarthy but rockets back off the upright. Kane wasn't alive to the rebound. Saints clear.
TOTTENHAM 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON
3: Cagey start. Ward-Prowse gets behind Rose but the full-back battles his way back. Saints look confident with the ball.
1: KICK-OFF! Here we go at Wembley. The Mark Hughes-less era is up and running for Saints. They have the first kick.....
HERE COME THE TEAMS…
The Wembley arch is illuminated with colours of the rainbow
in appreciation of the Rainbow Laces campaign which is striving for inclusivity
within the game. Out march both sets of players – Steven Davis is the Saints
skipper today, Harry Kane leads out the hosts.
HASENHUTTL IN THE HOUSE!
Ralph Hasenhuttl is here!
He takes his seat next the press box with all the club
directors. He’s an imposing figure. However, it’s not the best start as he
struggles to find his seat for a good two minutes! Eventually, he finds his
seat and settles down to watch his new team in action. Teams in the tunnel.
Tottenham find themselves out of the top four now and
they've got to bounce back from a bad afternoon at the Emirates. It's funny how
this league changes because one week we are talking about title contenders but
now they are out of the Champions League places. The Premier League is
ruthless! You've got to worry about Southampton in this game.
SPURS HATE DRAWS…!
Amazingly, Tottenham are the only team in the top seven
divisions in English football not to have drawn a league game this season.
Every other team has drawn at least twice.
This 14-game run is some way off the PL record of games
without a draw though – that was set by Bolton in 2011 when they went 28 games
without a stalemate!!
