Wielaert and Perez net for hosts before nervy finish

Steve McClaren's Twente qualified for the last 32 of the Uefa Cup after defeating Schalke 2-1 to progress from Group A. They took the lead in the third minute when Rob Wielaert made it two goals in as many European games. The defender had netted with a header against Manchester City last time and scored here with a right footed effort from close range after a Blaise Nkufo's cross. Three minutes before half-time, the visitors almost equalised via Orlando Engelaar, but his effort hit the post. They were made to pay for this miss then Kenneth Perez doubled the home side's advantage ten minutes after the re-start.

      Fantastic goal

He scored with a fantastic long-range effort into the bottom corner after receiving the ball from Eljero Elia on the left. But the visitors pulled one back via Gerald Asamoah with 13 minutes to go to set up a nervy finish. He scored from close range after Kevin Kuranyi had played the ball across the face of goal. In Group A's other game Man City, who had already qualified, were held to a goalless draw by Paris St Germain. Schalke have now completed all four games and currently sit in third with four points but will be looking nervously over their shoulder as both Racing Santander - who play Man City next - and PSG, who take on Twente, can overtake the German outfit.
