Burton climbed to fourth in League Two with a 3-1 win at Wycombe

Burton climbed to fourth in League Two with a 3-1 win over Wycombe in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's first match in charge.

Wycombe had the chance to go back to the top of the table but goals by Phil Edwards, Alex MacDonald and Jacob Blyth helped the Brewers move level on points with their opponents.

Burton fashioned their first goal under the new regime after 38 minutes when Edwards planted a powerful header from Matty Palmer's corner into the net.

Good start for Hasselbaink

Hasselbaink's side doubled their lead four minutes into the second half when Palmer's perfectly-weighted through-ball put in MacDonald who calmly finished through Matt Ingram's legs.

Wycombe were given a route back into the game after Hogan Ephraim was tripped in the area by Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Paul Hayes left visiting keeper Jon McLaughlin no chance with his penalty.

However, the visitors quickly restored their two-goal advantage as Damien McCrory's cross from the left was headed in from close range by substitute Blyth.

Hasselbaink said after the game: "It's a great way to start, I'm very happy with the start and I'm very happy with the performance.

"Let's not just look at the result; look at the performance - it was very good.

"I'm very happy with the determination and the commitment and it's very important to take that forward - you saw that they are willing.

"It was solid, we worked well together and we worked very hard, matched Wycombe with our work-rate - we knew that was going to be key - and we did our stages really, really well.

"We want to take it (push for promotion) as far as possible. Step by step we want to go all the way and then we build again to go all the way.

"We're going to fight for it, but it's not something that we talk about. It's about taking one game at a time and trying to improve game by game."

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "They came and they outfought us, outworked us and they took their chances.

"We had a few things go against us tonight but we were nowhere near the standards we've set so it's disappointing."
