Wycombe v Scunthorpe preview

Image: Winfield: In fitness race for Chairboys

Team news ahead of Saturday's League One clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Scunthorpe United at Adams Park.

Centre-halves Dave Winfield and Leon Johnson face a race against time to be fit. The pair missed the pre-season defeat to Northampton last weekend through injury. Both will be assessed in training before a decision is made on their fitness, but midfielders Stuart Lewis (virus) and Matt Bloomfield (groin) will definitely sit out Saturday's opener. Manager Gary Waddock said: "If everybody is fit then I know my starting XI. Everyone wants to play in that first game but I mentioned to the players on Monday that there will be some who will be disappointed. However, we have got, hopefully, 50-odd games to play. "They may miss out on the first game but, three or four games in, it could all change and they could go on and play 40 games. "Everybody will be used throughout the season and that is why we have got a squad which, in my opinion, is a good squad." Alan Knill is set to hand debuts to a trio of summer signings. Andy Barcham, Jimmy Ryan and Jordan Robertson could make their bows against the Chairboys after joining from Gillingham, Accrington and St Johnstone respectively. Striker Barcham, a free transfer signing from the Gills, is nursing a slight foot injury and will be assessed closer to kick-off but is hopeful of being passed fit for action. The only definite absentee is defender Cliff Byrne, who is sidelined with a knee injury. Iron winger Mark Duffy was absent when Scunthorpe were beaten 5-0 by Barnsley in their final pre-season friendly but looks certain to return to contention this weekend.
