Carlow 2-17 Louth 0-12
Diarmuid Walshe scored 1-2 as Carlow registered their first championship victory over Louth since 2011 in the opening round of the Leinster SFC at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise.
The Tinryland clubman was a late replacement for Chris Crowley before throw-in and he scored his goal seven minutes from time. Paul Broderick also racked up another big tally with 1-08.
The last time these sides met it finished in a massive 2-24 to 3-11 win for Louth just two years ago. But Turlough O'Brien's side advance to face Kildare, and they were ahead at half-time.
Louth had Derek Maguire black carded and Carlow held a 0-10 to 0-09 lead at the break. Louth were poor after half-time with Ryan Burns getting a straight red card for an off the ball incident.
Declan Byrne kicked Louth into a seventh-minute lead and William Woods extended their advantage shortly after.
But a resurgent Carlow hit back with a stunning effort from Paul Broderick, who scored from his left boot close to the left sideline. Sean Murphy levelled proceedings for the first time, 0-02 to 0-02 in the 11th minute.
The teams went point for point but as Louth pushed up high on Robbie Molloy's kick-out that tactic began to pay dividends.
Tommy Durnin, Ryan Burns and Gerard McSorley scored unanswered points between the 17th and 20th minutes and Louth raced clear. But Maguire got black for a body check in the 22nd minute, while Carlow moved back within range with a couple of efforts from Darragh Foley.
Carlow should have gone in front seven minutes before half-time but after Sean Murphy burst through the defence he rattled the crossbar with his shot.
McSorley continued to dominate down the Louth left flank and he tapped over his third point in the 28th minute but Carlow took over late on. Points from Diarmuid Walshe, Broderick and Eoghan Ruth gave them a one-point advantage at the interval.
Woods had a goal chance two minutes after half-time but he could not capitalise on Molloy's error from the kick-out. And a big Daniel St Ledger free doubled Carlow's lead.
Louth began to panic when they got the ball deep in Carlow territory and a few poor wides from Andy McDonnell and McSorley followed.
Broderick converted two simple frees for Carlow and it took until the 16th minute of the second half before Burns landed Louth's first point from a free.
But Broderick cancelled that out straight away and Carlow were 0-14 to 0-10 in front with 17 minutes remaining. Broderick extended that lead further with his fifth free.
But the crucial score arrived in the 63rd minute when Eoghan Ruth set up Walshe for the goal, three minutes later Broderick added another.
