Billy Hurley III produced a contender for the most innovative shot of the year after holing a remarkable chip for birdie from the green on the final day of the Wells Fargo Championship.
Hurley, who claimed his maiden PGA Tour title at last year's Quicken Loans National, left himself in a tough spot after coming up short and left with his approach to the par-four ninth at Eagle Point.
Because of the shape and contours of the green, putting was out of the question if he wanted to get the ball close to the hole as the preferred line would have taken his ball through the rough to the left.
So the former US Navy Lieutenant used his initiative and opted to chip the ball from the putting surface, and it proved a smart move as his ball gripped and spun to the left before finding the cup, some 85 feet away.
And with the greenkeeping staff presumably hiding behind a sofa in their clubhouse, Hurley took the time to replace the small divot he took with the stroke, carefully repairing the damage of his innovative birdie.
