Dustin Johnson holed out from 111 yards for eagle on day two of the FedEx St Jude Classic, and he came within an inch of doing the same on the next hole!

Dustin Johnson holed out from 111 yards for an outstanding eagle and then came agonisingly close to repeating the feat on the very next hole at the FedEx St Jude Classic.

The world No 2 produced arguably the shot of day one when he chipped in for birdie at the 12th despite having one foot planted in the water, and he thrilled the Memphis crowds again midway through his second round as he stormed into the early clubhouse lead.

Johnson, who will reclaim the world No 1 ranking from Justin Thomas if he stays at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, started at the 10th and covered the back nine in 34 before kick-starting his round in some style at the first.

The American was perhaps inspired by the Shot Clock Masters as he hit his approach before playing-partner Daniel Berger's ball had stopped moving on the green, and the Featured Group cameras caught up with Johnson's ball just in time to see it hop into the hole for an eagle-two.

Johnson then split the second fairway and had 114 yards for his second, and using the same wedge with which he had holed out at the first, he sent his ball straight over the flag and the backspin looked to be taking it straight into the cup.

But he clearly misjudged the break as his ball broke left and grazed the edge of the hole, leaving him a simple tap-in for birdie before he picked up three further shots coming in to card a 63 and hit the front on 10 under par.
