1982: The last time American players held all four majors

Jordan Spieth's second-place finish behind Jason Day at the 97th PGA Championship means there has not been a clean sweep of four American major holders for 33 years.
Spieth won back-to-back majors at Augusta and Chambers Bay followed by Zach Johnson's win at the Open Championship, meaning an American winner at Whistling Straits would have ended a three-decade old record.
We rewind back to 1982 when Craig Stadler, Tom Watson and Raymond Floyd were in possession of golf’s four majors.
Craig Stadler - Masters
Despite starting with an opening-round 75, the highest by a Masters champion, Stadler went on to win at Augusta courtesy of the tournament’s shortest ever play-off.
His victory wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared at the start of the final day. Stadler entered the round three strokes clear of the field and was in an even more commanding position when he reached the turn with a three-under 33.
But the wheels came off down the final stretch as he shot four over for the back nine, prompting a play-off with Dan Pohl. Stadler was awarded the trophy after the first hole, however, as Pohl missed a six-foot putt for par.
Tom Watson – US Open
Watson approached the par-three 17th on the final day at Pebble Beach tied for the lead with Jack Nicklaus, who had already completed his round.
Watson fired his tee shot over the green, some 16 feet from the hole. What followed was a moment of absolute brilliance.
“I thought if I could get my shot on line it would hit the pin and go in. That's the way I envisioned it.” That’s precisely what happened as Watson clinched his sixth major.
Tom Watson – Open Championship
The Open Championship was a home-from-home for Watson, who won the event five times in eight years.
In 1982, his victory at Royal Troon made him the fifth player to win the US Open and Open Championship after Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Lee Trevino.
He did so with a one shot victory ahead of Peter Oosterhuis and Nick Price.
Raymond Floyd – PGA Championship
Floyd became only the second player to shoot 63 at a major in his opening round, setting the tone for the rest of the weekend.
He fired 68 and 69 on Friday and Saturday was followed by a final-day 72 to win comfortably ahead of Lanny Wadkins by three shots.
It was Floyd’s second PGA Championship success following his win at the NCR Country Club in 1969.
