Sacha Modolo won a bunch sprint to claim his second stage win at the Giro d'Italia as Alberto Contador retained the overall lead.
The Italian rider was delivered to the finish by his Lampre team-mates at the end of the 134-km 17th stage between Tirano and Lugano in Switzerland, outpacing Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek) and Luka Mezgec (Giant-Alpecin) over the final few yards.
The general classification standings were unchanged, Tinkoff-Saxo's Contador maintaing a lead of just over four minutes after finishing safely in the pack.
A flat stage was livened up by a couple of breakaways, the first a three-man effort after just 2km Belgian Iljo Keisse and Italian duo Marco Bandiera and Giacomo Berlato.
The peloton caught up with them around 26km from home and then reeled in solo escapee Adam Hansen of Australia with 10km to race.
Sterner examinations lie ahead in the shape of three climbing tests over the next three days before the race concludes on Sunday with another flat stage between Torino and Milan.
