The NHL clash between the Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets was called off when Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench.
Stars centre Peverley had just left the ice when he slumped on the bench, before receiving treatment for what was described by one of the medics who treated him as a "cardiac event".
A statement from the NHL said the player was "doing well and is in a stable condition" and that the game was postponed "as a result of the emotional state of the players on both teams".
Elsewhere, The New York Islanders scored seven goals in the third period as they clinched a dramatic, come-from-behind 7-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
The Islanders were 3-0 behind before goals from Josh Bailey, Ryan Strome, Calvin de Haan and Frans Nielsen put them in front.
Christopher Tanev responded for the Canucks but further goals from Matt Martin, Anders Lee and Cal Clutterbuck finished Vancouver off.
Chris Kunitz scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins claimed a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals. Sidney Crosby also scored, while Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom netted for the Capitals.
Tyler Bozak, Phil Kessel and Paul Ranger were on target as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-1.
Matt Duchene scored an overtime winner as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 and Seth Jones did likewise to help the Nashville Predators see off the Ottawa Senators 4-3.
There were also wins for the Los Angeles Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes, who beat the Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning respectively.
