New Orleans Pelicans point guard Elfrid Payton is expected to miss six weeks with a fractured finger, the team announced on Monday.
Payton is set to undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair the fifth finger on his left hand, which was fractured during Friday's victory over the New York Knicks.
The injury occurred in Payton's first game back after missing nine straight games with an ankle injury.
Payton has averaged 9.7 points, 5.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds in the six games he has played during his first season in New Orleans.
The 24-year-old, who was the 10th pick in the 2014 NBA draft, spent his first three seasons with the Orlando Magic, before a short-lived stint with the Phoenix Suns during the second half of last season.
Shooting guard Jrue Holiday is set to resume point duties in Payton's absence, with Wesley Johnson coming into the starting five.
The Pelicans have recorded home wins over the Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs since Payton's latest injury occurred, taking their record to 10-7 for the season.
