Luka Doncic and Trae Young named on NBA All-Rookie first team

It is the first time since 1984-85 the top five picks in the draft made the first team

Dallas Mavericks swingman Luka Doncic and Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young were the unanimous selections to the 2018-19 NBA All-Rookie first team.

Joining them were Phoenix Suns centre Deandre Ayton, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr and Sacramento Kings forward Marvin Bagley III.

It is the first time since 1984-85 the top five picks in the draft made the first team. That year, Hakeem Olajuwon, Sam Bowie, Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and Charles Barkley were honoured.

Doncic and Young were named on all 100 ballots submitted by media members and are the leading contenders for Rookie of the Year honours, to be announced at the 2019 NBA Awards on June 24.

Ayton, the No 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, is also a finalist.

Doncic, 20, was a five-time Western Conference Rookie of the Month. He averaged 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists and registered eight triple-doubles in 72 games.

Young, 20, was a four-time Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month. He averaged 19.1 points, 8.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds and knocked down 156 3-pointers in 81 starts.

Making up the All-Rookie second team were Los Angeles Clippers guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Landry Shamet, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton, New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and Hawks guard Kevin Huerter.
