Richard Hughes has saddled his first winner as a trainer

Richard Hughes was thrilled to saddle his first winner as a trainer as Duchess Of Marmite claimed victory at Kempton.

The three-times champion jockey retired from the saddle at the end of Glorious Goodwood in the summer after a distinguished career to take the plunge in his new vocation.

Duchess Of Marmite was the 9-4 favourite for the 32Red On The App Store Handicap, turning out just a week after finishing third at the track, and Shane Kelly coaxed her to a neck success over Flighty Filia.

It was a timely and poignant first victory for Hughes for a number of reasons.

He said: "My father (Dessie Hughes) trained his last winner on this day last year and my sister (Sandra Hughes) had a winner at Fairyhouse today as well. I believe in fate and things happen for a reason.

"We only moved into the new yard at Weathercock House on Saturday, so to have a winner already is a great omen.

"I'm delighted for all my staff who have worked so hard in the last month or so with the move and everything else. They've worked all hours and gone above and beyond the call of duty.

"I took a bit of a chance running the filly back so quick, but it didn't look a great race and she did it well in the end."

Hughes confirmed his next intended runners would be at Wolverhampton on Friday week.
