Ballyandy (red and white silks), ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, streaks to victory in the Open meeting finale

Ballyandy ran out a game winner of the "High Sheriff Of Gloucestershire's" Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at Cheltenham.

Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and ridden by his son, Sam, the 8/1 chance knuckled down in the Prestbury Park gloom to score by a length from Potters Legend.

Ballyandy was maintaining his unblemished record after beating subsequent scorer Rodneythetrotter on his racecourse debut at Worcester last month and he put that experience and race-fitness to good use as he ground out victory.

The four-year-old was never far off the early pace and travelled kindly on the downhill run to the final turn, after which he burst into the lead and held off all challengers.

Potters Legend, trained by Lucy Wadham and ridden by Barry Geraghty, was gallant in defeat and there was only another length back to the brave pacesetter Aurillac, but Ballyandy was not for passing to provide his trainer with a solitary winner at the 2015 Open meeting.

"We've got the best bunch of young horses we've had for a while this year," said Twiston-Davies senior. "I think this one might be the best of them, but we'll see. We were certainly hopeful but when you come here with no collateral form, you really don't know what you've got.

"He's only four so the question now is whether we stay in bumpers with him this season or go hurdling. We're 50/50."
