Grizzel (5/2) flew fast and late to collar Clem Fandango in the shadow of the post in the Hilary Needler Trophy Fillies' Conditions Stakes at Beverley.

It looked for most of the closing stages as though Keith Dalgleish's runner was going to claim the historic contest only for the Pat Dobbs-ridden filly to power home.

The runner-up had helped set the early gallop on the outside of Boater while Spin Doctor raced on the outside of the pair in third.

Boater only gave way late on while Spin Doctor could never quite reach the front pair and Clem Fandango had put daylight between himself and the chasing pack inside the distance.

Grizzel, a Sandown maiden winner on debut, scythed her way through the pack though to put her head in front on the line with the winning margin just a neck.

Hannon said: "She's a lovely filly and she'll go for the Queen Mary or the Albany now.

"She's got loads of size about her. She's done well to win today.

"She's owned by the same people who owned Tiggy Wiggy."

The winner is a 14/1 chance with Sky Bet for the Queen Mary Stakes.
