Pat Dobbs brought Nations Alexander through with a late challenge

Nations Alexander won the Listed Cambridge News Magazine Supporting The AHT Empress Stakes at Newmarket under Pat Dobbs.

The ground was changed to heavy prior to the six furlong Listed race but that proved to be no problem to the daughter of Dark Angel who ran on strongly in the final half a furlong to score by a length and a quarter at 8/1.

Trained by Richard Hannon, her stablemate Somebody To Love headed the market but she missed the break and then raced a shade keenly and Sean Levey was quick to accept his fate when it was obvious that she didn't appear to be handling the ground.

The seven runners were tightly bunched passing the two pole and the pace began to quicken as they passed the furlong marker.

Marie Of Lyon and Angel Meadow challenged towards the stands' side but the race developed in the centre of the track with Nations Alexander, a twice raced maiden, coming clear of Hellofahaste.

It was a first victory in the race for Hannon whose father had saddled the winner in three of the past eight renewals.

"I think she's loved the ground," the winning trainer told Racing UK.

"She's bumped into two very nice fillies so far this season and we let her get a lead today whereas because she shows a lot of speed at home we've always ridden her handy.

"She's obviously a very nice filly. I think she won quite nicely and she might come back here for the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes or the Princess Margaret at Ascot.

"For me, last Tuesday she didn't work great and I rang the owner and said I wasn't sure if she should run but he said it's a black type race so let's go for it. Full credit for this goes to him.

"It looks like she may get seven and I think she will go on quick ground."

"Somebody To Love didn't handle the ground at all. I've no doubt she's a black type filly and we'll bring her back to a novice race and then go up from there.

"She's there for another day. She is a good filly, no doubt."
