Constantine Bay was a gritty winner

Constantine Bay had to dig deep to win the Albert Bartlett River Don Novices' Hurdle at Doncaster.

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old engaged in a terrific tussle with No Hassle Hoff for much of the long home straight at Town Moor and stuck his neck out close home to lift the Grade Two prize.

Two from two over hurdles prior to this three mile contest, the Kayf Tara gelding was conceding 7lbs to the runner-up but wouldn't be denied.

Winning jockey Jerry McGrath said: "He was running over three miles for the first time today and needed every yard as it was a real battle.

"I've just said to the owners, we might have to tread carefully with him as he doesn't want the ground any quicker than this, but he got away with it on the day.

"He's a staying chaser in the making."

Part-owner Claudio Michael Grech added: "What we do know about this horse is he can dig in and he had to today. He was brilliant.

"We'll enjoy today and speak to the boss (Henderson) and see where we go.

"He does really want soft or heavy ground."

The winning trainer said: "You've got to say that he is an Albert Bartlett horse. He has not got many options, but he won't run again before March.

"He has got a lot to learn, but he is tough. They finished a long way clear and you have to give him his due, as it was a fair performance."
