Murtagh - won aboard Midas Touch.

Midas Touch stepped up on his promising debut at Gowran Park when third to stablemate Jan Vermeer with a resounding seven-length success in the Tri Equestrian Maiden at the Curragh on Monday.

Aidan O'Brien's Galileo colt is bred to come into his own over middle distances as a three-year-old being out of the Darshaan mare Approach, but he relished the drop back to seven furlongs to oblige at odds of 4-11 under Johnny Murtagh.

Dropped into midfield from an early stage, Murtagh made his move entering the last two and a half furlongs when he urged his mount to take on the always-prominent Legendary Lad.

Dermot Weld's 16-1 chance proved hard to get past at first, prompting exchange punters to lay Midas Touch at 10-1, but once he got his head in front there was no stopping the Ballydoyle colt.

Legendary Lad held on for second, with David Wachman's Royal And Ancient keeping on for third.

Midas Touch holds an entry in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster but O'Brien isn't in any rush to make decisions regarding future targets just yet.

"I'm very happy with him," O'Brien told At The Races.

"He came on for the run at Gowran and he learnt a lot today. He stretched out very well.

"Jan Vermeer is very well and we're looking at one of the races in France for him, one of the Criterium's.

"They're progressing well from their first to their second start. He (Midas Touch) could run in one of those races too."

Ladbrokes introduced Midas Touch at 20-1 for next year's Derby at Epsom and their spokesman David Williams said:

"There was much to like about Midas Touch. The bare bones of the win aren't enough to propel him to the top of the betting but he's well worth a quote with the promise of more to come."
