In depth

Verdict

An incredible 27 of the 40 declared runners are trained in Ireland. Six are handled by Gordon Elliot with Willie Mullins saddling five. The former’s Fury Road looks overpriced given he was only nine lengths behind Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup in February. He was second in the Mildmay here last year and is a former Grade 1 winner himself. Delta Work has won back-to-back cross-country chases at the Cheltenham Festival and was third in this last year and Coko Beach won the Grand National Trial at Punchestown in February. Mr Incredible has placed in the Classic Chase and the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir in his last two starts and may be Mullins’ best hope ahead of the National Hunt Chase winner Gaillard Du Mesnil. Noble Yeats is 19lb higher than when beating Any Second Now last year but has proved himself to be a smart stayer this season, finishing fourth in the Gold Cup last month. The Big Dog won the Troytown at Navan in the autumn but runner-up Lifetime Ambition is 4lb better off and has been aimed at this. Le Milos just needed the run when turned over at Kelso and won the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury at the end of last year but CORACH RAMBLER was an eye-catcher in fourth that day and is 7lb better off. From a handicapping perspective, he has to be the choice as he would have been carrying 10lb more had the assessor been able to take into account a second win in the Ultima at Cheltenham last month. He shapes as though he’ll stay this marathon trip and Lucinda Russell did, of course, send out One For Arthur to win this in 2017. Fortescue handled these fences when a staying-on fourth in the Becher in December and could go well at a price and Our Power is also still at the right end of the handicap despite having won valuable 3m handicaps at Ascot and Kempton this season.
