Verdict

A wide open renewal further complicated by the possibility of the ground drying out. But that should not effect the chances of CLOTH OF STARS (NAP) as the French raider has won on a range of going. It was good ground at Saint-Cloud last month when Andre Fabre’s Godolphin colt reversed earlier running with Group 1 winner Robin Of Navan to land a Group 2 contest in fine style and that is arguably the best form on offer. Aidan O’Brien has sent out three of the last four winners and runs five this year. Ryan Moore sticks with Chester Vase winner Us Army Ranger, who ran green when just getting the better of stablemate Port Douglas and should know more today. Both Shogun and Idaho finished behind Leopardstown Derby Trial winner Moonlight Magic and Deauville found Wings of Desire too good in the Dante at York. The latter bids to emulate John Gosden’s success with Golden Horn last year while Sir Michael Stoute last won this in 2010 and has a live contender with impressive Newbury maiden winner Ulysses. Harzand landed the Ballysax at Leopardstown and has to come into the reckoning while Massaat cannot be ignored on his second to Galileo Gold in the 2000 Guineas. Handicap winner Red Verdon and Humphrey Bogart were both supplemented for this but the latter was behind Across The Stars in the Lingfield Derby Trial while Algometer won a Derby-prep at Goodwood and Biodynamic finished a long way behind Us Army Ranger at Chester.
