A race marred by the tragic demise of Twist Magic who had jumped impeccably up until the point of his departure at the second last. His unproven stamina had yet to be put to the test at that point but he had travelled all over his rivals up to that point, looking every inch the class horse in the race, and surely would have won if lasting home. His fall left Breedzbreeze in the lead but TARTAK rallied gamely to get the better of Paul Nicholls' charge who was entitled to need this first outing since February 2009. The Tom George trained winner had proved very disappointing on his season return in the Old Roan chase and was far from impressive here as he lacked fluency at his fences and tended to run in snatches. He was tried in a tongue-tie here for the first time which may have benefited him and he does deserve credit for putting his head down and responding to a strong drive from Paddy Brennan. Tom George reported that the Ryanair would be considered but that the three mile contest at Aintree would be his main target but this level of form is a long way short of what's required to trouble the principals in those contests. This was an encouraging return from a leg injury from the runner-up who did notably lose ground at a couple of his fences but had jumped safely; he lost little in defeat but may not be easy to place in the short-term. Deep Purple was brought down by Twist Magic but was not in contention at the time and was a long way below his best; he now has something to prove after a slightly disappointing run in the Charlie Hall on his seasonal reappearance where he made late gains to finish a never dangerous third. Master Medic had improved in leaps and bounds for the Alners but had reportedly suffered 'a few niggly problems' since pulling up in the King George VI Chase. He was entitled to need this return but was never travelling from an early stage and can only be watched until offering more encouragement.
