COUNTRYWIDE FLAME had contested some decent juvenile contests with credit this season but was rather overlooked in the betting in the belief that some less-exposed types would improve past him. But it was his grit and determination that won the day in the end as he came from an unpromising position at the top of the hill and stayed on strongly under a fine ride from the criminally underused Dougie Costello. John Quinn's diminutive inmate - described as "15.1 hands and a fingerprint" - still had 10 lengths to make up on the front rank off the home bend but he made up ground in relentless fashion, jumped the last level with Grumeti and then powered up the hill to score convincingly. He may not be the classiest individual in the line-up but rolling your sleeves up can count for as much in races likes this and he is a credit to his connections. Hisaabaat had beaten the winner at Leopardstown last time by three lengths and travelled strongly in mid-division under Andrew Lynch. He was poised to pounce in behind the leaders on the run to the last under the stands' rails but lost a little momentum as he jumped the obstacle and then had to switch around Grumeti. Neither helped his cause but the winner was already clear heading up the hill. Grumeti jumped the last almost in front but could only find the one pace in the closing stages after he had travelled a little bit in snatches. He could be better suited by more of a speed test and Aintree would suit him nicely. He had beaten Dodging Bullets handily at Kempton last time and that rival got closer to him this time around as he overcame his inexperience to run a screamer. Connections had thought he would be mentally sharper here and is a shoo-in for a novice event if turning out again this season. 100-1 chance Wingtips defied his price and will not be long in breaking his maiden tag either. He stuck on really well for pressure in the home straight despite a flash of the tail and his turn will come for certain. Sadler's Risk's effort petered out towards the last hurdle after leading for a long way while Hollow Tree could not muster a finishing kick up the run-in. Both have looked useful this season and remain worth keeping an eye on. Shadow Catcher was free in rear early on and was done no favours when Balder Succes came down at the fourth hurdle. He had form with the front two in that Leopardstown race last time and deserves another chance for certain given a cleaner passage. Balder Succes raced wide, lurched at the fourth and that was that while Urbain De Sivola was down on his nose two out having been in a good position - that was his race over. Baby Mix is very talented and held every chance turning in but did not find a great deal for pressure as Pearl Swan took a heavy fall at the last having never really looked happy at any stage. Willie Mullins has had a hit-and-miss week and his duo Ut De Sivola and Darroun put up fairly tame efforts.
