Exeter Sevens on Sky Sports: Ireland in pole position

The 2018 Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series arrives in Exeter this weekend, with all the action live on Sky Sports.

There are four legs to the European season, and though this weekend serves as a good warm-up ahead of the Sevens World Cup taking place in San Francisco this month, there is also an added incentive for those taking part. The top placing non-core teams will advance to the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens qualification tournament, with a chance to become a core team in the World Sevens Series.

There have been two tournaments so far this year, with Ireland dominating all before them in Moscow in the first edition. They beat Germany 28-7 in the final, with the seven points scored by the Germans the only points conceded by Ireland throughout the entire tournament.

Ireland and Germany were once again finalists in Marcoussis in the second edition last weekend, and Ireland won 49-7 to take themselves to a maximum 40 points from the first two legs. Losing finalists Germany are close behind them on 36 points, and Russia are in third place on 26 points.
