Kyle Edmund defeated young Australian Alex de Minaur to reach the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open in Portugal.
The third seed looked in complete control at a set and 4-2 up only for 19-year-old De Minaur, one of the brightest young talents in the sport, to win the next three games but Edmund broke again to lead 6-5 and served out a 6-2 7-5 victory after an hour and 37 minutes.
The British No 1, who recently reached his first ATP Tour final on clay in Marrakesh, is guaranteed to face a Portuguese opponent next, either Joao Sousa, who needed two and a half hours to knock out namesake and compatriot Pedro Sousa with a 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 7-5 win.
"I felt really good with how I played throughout," Edmund said. "I faced a tough opponent, who is very resilient. He didn't give away a lot of points, I had to work for this win. But I enjoyed winning a tough test, delivering in a pressure match.
"I've trained with Alex. I know he has a difficult game. He likes to counter-attack and use the pace to deflect.
"I knew how the match would go. I had to execute and impose my game to win it."
Meanwhile, Britain's Cameron Norrie will take on Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena for a place in the last eight on Thursday.
Coverage of the ATP Madrid Open gets underway on Sky Sports Arena on Monday, May 7 from 11am.
