Birmingham City have secured the services of Luton Town striker Isaac Vassell on a four-year contract.

The 23-year-old spent only one full season at Kenilworth Road but his performances marked him down as one of the game's most exciting talents.

Vassell, a cousin of former Aston Villa and England striker Darius Vassell, was born in Newquay and came through the youth ranks at Plymouth Argyle.

Blues boss Harry Redknapp said: "He's come out of non-league. Just a couple of years back he was playing down in the West Country in the non-league and he's come in and done well at Luton. He's quick and strong.

"We think he's a player with a good future but hopefully he can come in and have an impact sooner than we originally looked for because we are short up front".

Comparisons can be drawn with Leicester striker Jamie Vardy as Vassell went part time in non-league to re-ignite his career, plus working on building sites alongside his football before moving to Luton.

"If he's as good as Jamie Vardy we'll all be happy that's for sure," Redknapp added.

"You never know. I think it's great that Jamie's come out of non league and it gives hope to all the non league players. Many years ago non league was just a conveyor belt for top players like Ian Wright, Les Ferdinand or Stuart Pearce.

"It's been more difficult of late but I'm sure there's still loads of talent down there."

Vassell made 10 appearances for the Pilgrims and after being released by the Home Park club resurrected his career at Truro City.

Vassell becomes Birmingham's fifth signing of the transfer window after David Stockdale, Marc Roberts, Cheikh Ndoye, with Craig Gardner's loan being made permanent.
