Juan Manuel Marquez has called for Miguel Cotto to face him at 148lbs after talks broke down over the weight limit for their proposed super-fight.

The Mexican remains willing to share the ring with Cotto, a fellow multi-weight world champion, but the 43-year-old has been campaigning at welterweight in the latter years of his career and is reluctant to step up much higher.

Marquez, who won his first world title at featherweight, pointed to recent comments from Cotto's trainer Freddie Roach which suggested the 35-year-old can still make welterweight, and would even allow his opponent to weigh a pound over the 147 limit.

He told ESPN Deportes: "There would have to be an agreement on the weight. He and his team wanted to fight at 150 or 151, which I believe is particularly a lot of weight.

"Maybe there could be a maximum weight of 148, because we are already giving away an advantage the following day. How much weight will he put on?

"Here is the important thing, Cotto is a great fighter and it would be an interesting fight for the fans, but it is also necessary to see what the weight would be.

"Freddie Roach had mentioned that [Cotto] was able to make the 147 limit - now why can't he give me [a limit of] 147 if he wants to fight with me?"
