Daniel Jacobs stops Peter Quillin to retain world title

Daniel Jacobs retained his world middleweight title in convincing style with a first-round stoppage of Peter Quillin in Brooklyn.
The WBA champion took just 85 seconds to stop previously unbeaten Quillin and send a warning to Chris Eubank Jnr and Spike O'Sullivan, who meet on December 12 live on Sky Sports Box Office for the right to become Jacobs' mandatory challenger.
Jacobs and Quillin both grew up in the same area of New York, but there was no hint of their long-standing friendship as the champion followed up a blow to Quillin's temple with a flurry of punches to finish the fight.
It was a 28th knockout in 32 fights for Jacobs (31-1), and afterwards he said: "I hope he's OK. I was patient and when I came with an uppercut I knew I hurt him and that's when I went for the kill.
"I told him I love him. Me and Peter go back to the Golden Glove days. I respect him to death, but I knew this fight would be my night. There are no lucky shots in boxing. Obviously, I caught him with a shot. Once I knew I had him hurt I kept going."
Quillin watched the telling punch back on a replay at ringside and said: "That's right on the temple. In the moment you don't know what happens until you see it in the replay.
"This is a time you sit with your family and figure out what you have to do. I have a lot of options, maybe a rematch is the best option. I can't think of a better person to lose to than Danny Jacobs."
Earlier in the evening Jesus Cuellar unanimously outpointed Jonathan Oquendo to retain his WBA featherweight belt.
