Walter McGowan, former world flyweight champion, dies at 73

Former world flyweight boxing champion Walter McGowan has died at the age of 73.
McGowan, who was born in Hamilton, won British, Commonwealth and European titles before defeating Salvatore Burruni to win the world flyweight crown in 1966.
He had been in poor health in recent years and had been living in a nursing home in Bellshill. He died at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie on Monday night.
Promoter Alex Morrison confirmed the news on his Facebook page, writing: "Walter McGowan M.B.E. former world flyweight champion passed away last night after a long illness.
"Walter had it all - good looks, articulate, witty and had great boxing skills. He will be remembered as an all time Scottish great and an amazing character who had time for everyone."
