Golovkin vs Brook: Dominic Ingle on the change in Kell Brook
Thursday 8 September 2016 15:46, UK
Trainer Dominic Ingle believes the odds on Kell Brook beating Gennady Golovkin will shorten once 'The Special One' steps on the scales and shows off his new physique.
Brook (36-0-KO25) is already tailing off preparations for Saturday's colossal clash with WBA Super, WBC and IBF world middleweight king Golovkin (35-0-KO32) - live on Sky Sports Box Office - and told Thursday's final press conference he's been "a joy to train."
There was no disagreement from Ingle, who says the extra 13lbs weight allowance has allowed Brook to fuel himself with energy and enthusiasm for work.
Ingle said: "This fight couldn't have come at a better time for us or Kell. He's been looking to move up weights for a long time but we pursued the route of the welterweight title. We had to achieve that first.
"We've bypassed eliminators and hard fights to get to this point and I think people begin to realise after all the publicity that if anybody ever thought Kell Brook was a small guy, a welterweight stepping up to fight a middleweight, they're very wrong.
"He's done 20-week training camps to get down to weight. We've had him on special diets to take muscle off and safely make the weight. It's the only time I've seen him happy in a training camp. Before, he never had a smile on his face.
"This time, he's been happy and has had energy all the way through the training camp. I'm betting the odds are going to change when he steps on the scales on Friday when people see how he's built his physique.
"This is not a big guy fighting a small guy. That advantage is gone. We've had it calculated. You can't take chances with a guy like Golovkin because one mistake and the game's over."
Kazakhstan's Golovkin is seen as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport and many expect him to cement his reputation as one of its greatest-ever punchers on his UK debut.
Needless to say, Ingle sees things differently.
He added: "It's the first time Golovkin will face an unbeaten champion with ambition, a younger guy. Kell's been in the position where people don't want to fight him and so has Triple G. Nobody gives Kell a chance but we're not here to pick up a pay cheque - we're here to make history.
"We all know what Prince Naseem Hamed did. He won all those titles, was a great name and a great fighter. This was always going to be the next kid coming through. He's beaten everyone put in front of him. On Saturday, the ambition and will he's going to bring into the fight will be nothing like what Golovkin has faced before.
"Don't blink, keep your eyes glued and don't write off Kell Brook. Keep your minds open because this guy is the underdog but is coming to win."
