Leo Santa Cruz will target a unification clash against IBF champion Lee Selby if he wins a January rematch with Carl Frampton

Leo Santa Cruz will pursue a unification clash with Lee Selby if he avenges his defeat to Carl Frampton in their January rematch.

The Californian suffered a thrilling points defeat to Frampton in the summer and the featherweight rivals will meet again in Las Vegas on January 28.

After losing his unbeaten record and his WBA 'super' title, Santa Cruz is determined to overcome the Northern Irishman and then try to unify the belts against IBF champion Lee Selby or WBC king Gary Russell Jr.

"For that loss I got, I want to get revenge," he told Michelle Joy Phelps of Behind the Gloves.

"I had a perfect record and losing to him, now I have to go out there and beat him. Beating him, it won't erase it, but I will feel like I'm still undefeated and then after that, if we get the win, I would like to unify against Gary Russell or Lee Selby, and whoever is in that division."

Santa Cruz has revealed how preparations for the first fight had been far from ideal due to the absence of his father and trainer, who has been battling with cancer.

But Jose Santa Cruz's health has improved and the three-weight world champion insists he is now fully focused on Frampton.

"I didn't train as I had to before. My dad wasn't there in camp with us. It was a time he was in chemo, he was in the hospital, so I think my mind was more over there.

"With this fight, it's going to be way different. My dad is going to be there the whole time."
