Kell Brook says he will fight Amir Khan at welterweight as long as the former super lightweight world champion finally steps up to the plate.

The British rivals have been in a social war with each other for the last two years with Khan firing the last shot, suggesting he would only fight the "Special One" if he dropped back down to 147lbs.

Brook is still waiting for the fractured eye socket to heal and is still not sure what weight he will move down to following the middleweight showdown with Gennady Golovkin in September.

"I'm still taking it easier, enjoying time with my family, but I really believe for the right fight I will get back down to welterweight again," he told Sky Sports.

"That is where the big fights are at the moment - and it has to be one that excites me because other than that, it takes too much out of me.

"If Amir Khan finally stepped up and if the fight is nailed and all signed, that's when you'll see me back at 147.

"I've heard all that rubbish before [about fighting Khan], but at the end of the day, you all know I want that fight with Khan - for everyone and to shut him up more than anything."

Brook's injury could well see him give time to decide whether to remain IBF welterweight champion and take on mandatory challenger Errol Spence, or vacate it and move up, possibly to super-welterweight.

The Sheffield star admits the American known as "The Truth" is "knocking on the door" of the elite group of champions, with Danny Garcia (WBC), Keith Thurman (WBA) and Jessie Vargas (WBO), who is defending against Manny Pacquiao in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Brook put Khan in the same bracket as Spence and believes his fight with Golovkin on its own moved him above the Bolton fighter in the boxing pecking order.

"He talks about all these fights like that Eubank kid and the way he talked about Golovkin," Brook said, referring to Chris Eubank Jr.

"He asked me if I really wanted to fight him and I said yes and I was going to step up and do it. Too many people just talk about these fights but a few of them step onto the plate - and I was one of them.

"It's come 'round full circle now. My status is higher than his when it comes to boxing so, if he wants it, he's going to have to step up to the plate."
