Oleksandr Gvozdyk remains unbeaten after Isaac Chilemba retires with broken hand

Oleksandr Gvozdyk of Ukraine lands a left to the head of Isaac Chilemba of Malawi during their light heavyweight bout

Oleksandr Gvozdyk made it 13 straight wins after Isaac Chilemba was forced to retire at the end of the eighth round with a broken hand.

The Ukranian light-heavyweight looked good against the familiar, awkward and frustrating Chilemba, who took Sergey Kovalev 12 rounds back in July and had previously drawn and then lost to Tony Bellew.

It was the first time Chilemba had failed to go the distance and within minutes it was confirmed that he had broken his right hand in a typically rough encounter in the 10-rounder.

Gvozdyk though showed his potential as compatriot and close friend Vasyl Lomachenko sat ringside and Kovalev watched on as his hands were being wrapped ahead of his points defeat to Andre Ward.

After a cautious start, the London 2012 bronze medalist opened up with rapid combinations pinning Chilemba back but also had to go through the experience of handling the Malawian's awkward approach.

At times he eased off, letting Chilemba land his usual sharp shots but the fourth round in particular saw Gvozdyk continue to jab his way into range and then let loose.

Chilemba threw plenty but never really tested the Ukranian's chin and although he did not win every round, he looked like he was ready to increase the pace only for the surprise finish coming at the end of the eighth.
