Peter Fury will be allowed into New Zealand to help his son Hughie prepare for a world title challenge against Joseph Parker on May 6.

Trainer Fury had his initial application rejected on grounds of character, linked to two previous spells in prison, but Associate Minister of Immigration David Bennett granted a special direction, so he can prepare his son for the bout with WBO world heavyweight champion Parker.

Bennett said: "This is a national sporting event with worldwide interest, and Mr Fury is the trainer of Hughie Fury.

"While the decision to decline the initial application was correct according to Immigration New Zealand instruction, in this case, under section 17 of the Immigration Act 2009, I am granting a special direction to grant the visitor visa to Mr Fury."

In 2013, Peter Fury was denied entry into the United States when nephew Tyson Fury fought Steve Cunningham at New York's Madison Square Garden.

The New Zealand visa will run for just over six weeks, from March 28th to May 10th, and Duco Events boss David Higgins added: "He's no risk.

"He's devoted himself to training world champion boxers for the past 10 years, as evidence with Tyson Fury defeating Wladimir Klitschko for the world heavyweight title."

It is understood the Fury camp will base themselves in Auckland for up to a month before the title fight.

Fury's opponent Parker has won all 22 of his professional fights - 18 by knock-out - and claimed the vacant WBO world title last December with a points win over Andy Ruiz Jr.
