George Groves talks James DeGale and the condition of Eduard Gutknecht

George Groves has laughed off suggestions by James DeGale that he does not deserve "a 50/50 split" from a rematch.

The 29-year-old Groves got his hands on the WBA 'super' super-middleweight strap with a sixth-round stoppage of Fedor Chudinov at the end of May having failed in three previous fights to win a world title.

Groves told Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday he would return to the ring in September or October having undergone surgery for a broken jaw suffered in the third round of the bout at Bramall Lane.

DeGale, who lost to Groves in 2011, revealed on Tuesday he also needed surgery - on his shoulder - which will push back the next defence of his IBF super-middleweight title.

And Groves was amused by DeGale's claims that he did not deserve an equal split of the fight purse, if the Londoners share the ring for a second time.

James DeGale ruled out because of surgery

"I deserve more - he's right!" Groves joked on SSN HQ. "His surgery is more strategic. He was hoping for a big date this month and he probably thought he'd get a fight against me or Callum Smith.

"He will get neither. He probably thinks it's the right time to take some time out. It makes sense if he's not 100 per cent and if I do fight him I want him to be 100 per cent and not making any excuses.

"There are plenty of big fights out there so we'll see what can be made."

Mikkel Kessler is another name suggested as a possible opponent for Groves, but the 29-year-old is calm about who he fights next.

Highlights from the WBA 'super' super-middleweight title fight between George Groves and Fedor Chudinov

"I think I boxed good at the weekend and I don't think a lot of people will rush to fight me on the form I'm in now," he added.

"I don't need to chase anyone. Everyone is coming for me! I've had quite a few offers for big fights. There's potential for a fight with Callum Smith if he comes through his next fight with Anthony Dirrell.

"But I am getting better. People say I'm back to my best and that's how I feel. [Trainer] Shane McGuigan is bringing out new things with me, my fitness is better and I can change my assault from head to body.

"I don't think many guys will be rushing to fight me - apart from the young hungry ones who still think of themselves!"
