Terry Flanagan won't be changing his lifestyle despite becoming WBO world lightweight champion

Terry Flanagan will not be treating himself to a new car despite becoming WBO world lightweight champion in front of his home fans at the Manchester Arena on Saturday.

Flanagan seized the vacant strap after a shoulder injury forced opponent Jose Zepeda to retire in the second round, but the 26-year-old says he's happy with his Volkswagen Polo and will even be giving the belt to coach Steve Maylett.

The former scaffolder, who is the first Englishman to win a lightweight world title in the history of the sport and Manchester's first world champion since Ricky Hatton a decade ago, said in an interview reported on boxingscene.com: "I take every day as it comes. I'm just the same old me.

"I'll still be walking up the street tomorrow. I'll still drive my Polo. I only use it to go to the gym. I'm not bothered about cars. I'd rather buy a house than a fancy car and drive about like I'm someone I'm not.

"I'm off on holiday so I'll give it [the belt] to my coach Steve. He'll have it in his house. I'm not that bothered. He can keep hold of it. He's the one who deserves it because without him, I wouldn't be where I am today."

Flanagan may be off on holiday but he'll be watching Anthony Crolla's bid to beat Darleys Perez to the vacant WBA title live on Sky Sports on Saturday - and hints a domestic unification fight could be in the pipeline.

He added: "I'll be watching and sending him a good luck message. The unification would be good. Hopefully if he does go and win the title it can happen but let him enjoy that if he does."

Crolla's clash with Perez features on another huge night of boxing that also sees Scott Quigg defend his world title against Kiko Martinez.
