Broner vs Garcia: Johnny Nelson says stern words from Floyd Mayweather will help Adrien Broner

Adrien Broner, Hip Hop artist Rick Ross, and former champion boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr

Adrien Broner is topping the bill at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, against Mikey Garcia on Saturday. Johnny Nelson dismisses the idea that 'The Problem' is past his best but says there is one man he needs to receive some advice from... Floyd Mayweather.

I am an Adrien Broner fan and there is one thing he needs if he is going to beat Mikey Garcia and that is a stern talking to from Floyd Mayweather.

Yes, Mayweather has other stuff to worry about and yes, they might not be bosom buddies these days but 'The Problem' is his own biggest problem and he needs someone to tell him he can't afford to mess this around.

I reckon he has had a stern word or two because this could easily be Broner's last big fight. If he loses to Garcia he might well have just turned 28, but from here on in, he will become just an 'opponent'.
Johnny Nelson

Brendan Ingle always used to tell us to 'stop worrying about looking good' because boxing was our job and if one man shows us that it has to be treated as a business, it is Floyd.

He set the blueprint. He's done it all off his own back and ignored what the masses have said but he just kept winning. Broner put himself in a similar position but that is where he got it wrong.

This time though, he seems - and I say "seems" - to have gone back to old school for this one. He does go underground but I am hearing he is training hard, up in altitude in Colorado, so maybe someone has had a serious word in his ear... Floyd Mayweather.

They have fallen out of love with each other in the past and I am sure that was only because he tells him how it is. Broner has blown opportunities and chances and I am sure Floyd would've been telling him, 'you have to back up everything you are giving out'.

The boxing enthusiasts I was talking to out in New York are expecting 'Mikey' to do a job on him and plenty of them were saying Broner is past his best.

I don't agree. He still has the artillery, the tools and the hunger to prove the doubters wrong. Yes, he is the underdog and I can see why, but I just think this fight could bring the best out of him.

Because no one is expecting him to win, he can't go in with that pompous arrogate attitude, tell Garcia 'I'm too good for you' and then stand back and admire his work.

These are the sort of challenges that Broner needs. Yes, his two losses against Shawn Porter and Marcos Maidana were because they were both strong, pressure fighters and maybe he couldn't do what he usually does, but we still saw a guy who loves to fight and has that desire.

He needs that here and if anyone can get through to him to change his approach, it can only be Mayweather.
