England pace bowler James Anderson was forced off the field during the final session of the third Investec Ashes Test against Australia with a "tight side".

Anderson - celebrating his 33rd birthday - had figures of 1-15 but managed only three balls of his ninth over in Australia's second innings before leaving the field because of the injury to his left side, with spinner Joe Root finishing his over.

After Jimmy Anderson suffered suspected damage to an intercostal muscle, the panel believe it is disastrous news for England.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement read: "James Anderson has a tight side and will be assessed overnight and in the morning. There will be an update (on Friday)."

England are in a commanding position at Edgbaston - they had a 145-run lead on the first innings - and have already taken seven wickets towards the end of day two with the tourists only just having taken the lead.

But there must now be real concerns over their leading wicket taker being available for the fourth Test.

Sky Sports cricket expert Nasser Hussain said: "It could be the last we see him in this series. He averages seven wickets a game at Trent Bridge. It is a massive blow."

On possible replacements, Hussain suggested the England selectors would look no further than Mark Wood who was not selected for the Birmingham clash having featured in Cardiff and at Lord's.

"I don't think his anke injury is that bad," the former England skipper added. "It was horses for courses for selection so they rested him. You'd think they'd want Wood to come straight back in.

"They may want another swing option like Liam Plunkett but it will probably be Wood. But let’s hope Jimmy is fit."

The fourth Ashes showdown begins at Trent Bridge on Thursday August 6.
