The stricken England skipper, 42 not out overnight, visited hospital on Monday morning, before resuming his innings once Moeen Ali was out lbw to Nathan Lyon for 13.

However, Root was unable to bat after lunch as his symptoms returned and retired injured on 58, having hit just one boundary as he braved his way to a fifth fifty of the series and second of the match.

Illness hit England, then, but it was Smith and Australia's attack that did the damage during the five Tests - and Athers says the tourists must bring a more potent bowling line-up to the next away Ashes series in 2021/2022.

"Australia bowled quicker, faster, hit the pitch harder and had the best spinner on either side. There is a gulf between the sides in these conditions and that is something England really have to address."
