Wayne Parnell blasted a career-best 99 from 57 balls to fire Cape Cobras to a six-wicket win over Highveld Lions and up to second in the Ram Slam.
Parnell, promoted to opener with Richard Levi unable to bat after being stuck on the head by a ball while fielding, thumped nine fours and five sixes as Cobras chased down 154 with five balls to spare in Johannesburg.
Lions posted 153-5, thanks largely to opener Derek Conway (37 from 36) and an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 53 from 27 deliveries between Dwaine Pretorious (33 from 18) and skipper Thami Tsolekile (25 from 14).
Justin Kemp (2-26) was the pick of the Cobras bowlers in his 100th T20 encounter but Pretorious and Tsolekile clubbed 52 runs from the final four overs, with the last going for 18.
The late run-fest counted for nothing, however, as Parnell ran riot, although the South African was denied a century when he holed out to backward point looking to wallop a third consecutive six off Aaron Phangiso.
Sky Sports' live coverage of the Ram Slam continues at 4pm on Wednesday as the Cobras meet Chevrolet Warriors at Buffalo Park.
