We take a look back at Muttiah Muralitharan's extraordinary performance at the Oval in 1998

England begin their Test series against Sri Lanka on Thursday - and they'll probably be pretty happy they won't have to contend with Muttiah Muralitharan.

The spin-bowling supremo, who took a record 800 Test wickets between 1992 and 2010, ran riot at The Oval in 1998, taking match figures of 16-220 as Sri Lanka secured a 10-wicket triumph.

Muralitharan collected 7-155 first time around as England posted 445 all out - John Crawley (156no) and Graeme Hick (107) each hitting hundreds.

But his real damage came in England's second dig, with the unorthodox bowler amassing 9-65 from 54.2 overs as the hosts were skittled for 181. Alec Stewart, run out by substitute fielder Upul Chandana, was the only man not ousted by Muralitharan.

During a scintillating display of bowling, Murali had Mark Butcher stumped, Hick, Ben Hollioake and Ian Salisbury trapped lbw and Steve James, Mark Ramprakash and Dominic Cork caught out. He also bowled Crawley and the last man to fall Darren Gough.
