Chris Woakes took four wickets against Pakistan but the tourists will be satisfied with their day’s work after an unbeaten Misbah-ul-Haq century guided them to 282-6 at stumps on day one of the first Investec Test.

Woakes had openers Mohammad Hafeez (40) and Shan Masood (7) caught behind during the morning session, reducing Pakistan to 51-2 after choosing to bat when they won the toss.

Debutant Jake Ball claimed his maiden Test scalp when he trapped Azhar Ali (7) lbw in the second over of the afternoon before Younis Khan (33) was dismissed rather softly, chipping Stuart Broad to mid-wicket.

But Misbah and Asad Shafiq restored to order to Pakistan's innings. Making his debut at Lord's, Misbah cracked 18 fours as the 42-year-old claimed his 10th Test century, ending the day on 110 not out.

Shafiq also impressed during his 130-ball knock of 73, before leaving his bat dangling and nicking Woakes to Bairstow 10 minutes before the close. Night watchman Rahat joined Misbah at the crease but he fell - without scoring - to the last ball of the day as Woakes claimed his fourth wicket.
