England v Ireland: No excuses for 'dismal' batting display by visitors, says Kyle McCallan

Former Ireland offspinner Kyle McCallan says there is no excuse for Ireland's "dismal" batting display in the first ODI defeat to England, in Bristol.

Ireland were well placed at 81-2 in the 18th over when batting first, before losing eight wickets for 47 runs to be skittled for 126.

With the ICC deciding on whether to award Ireland Test status in June, McCallan - who played 39 ODI's for Ireland between 2006 and 2009 - has called for a response from the team in Sunday's second ODI at Lord's.

"It was a dismal batting performance," said McCallan. "There is no point in buttering it up, no point in making excuses. It has been a poor day at the office.

Highlights for the first ODI between England and Ireland in Bristol

"Myself, along with the vast majority of guys in that changing room and the cricket-loving public in Ireland will be pretty dejected.

"I wish I could say it was a one-off, but I'm concerned at the standards we have set in white-ball cricket over the last 18 months.

"A lot of these guys have been around the block, and even the new guys in the team, a lot of them have now played 50 games. It's not good enough, and I think that now probably needs to be said.

"I'm all for playing with an aggressive attitude - when I was playing for Ireland, it was all about trying to compete and just trying not to be beaten - but sometimes you have to give yourself a chance.

"We were 81-2 at one stage and set-up quite nicely, and then to go from that to 126 all out, it's just not good enough.

"England cruised to the target to win by seven wickets, but we dropped Alex Hales twice and 250-260 might have been a score to give England problems today. We didn't give ourselves a chance.

"There's a huge burden on this Ireland side at the moment - they understand that every time they play there is a huge amount on it, the ICC is watching them.

"If anybody needs motivation to go to Lord's on Sunday and put this right, then they shouldn't be wearing the green jersey."
