South Africa have confirmed Dale Steyn will miss the rest of the Test series against India with a bruised left heel.

Steyn sustained the injury during day two of the first Test in Cape Town, a match the Proteas won by 72 runs, and will now be reassessed in four to six weeks' time.

The 34-year-old, who batted in South Africa's second innings on day four, was playing his first Test since November 2016 having battled a long-standing shoulder injury.

Steyn was unable to bowl in India's second innings at Newlands but did take two wickets in their first to move on to 419 Test scalps, two shy of South Africa's leading Test wicket-taker Shaun Pollock.

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis said of Steyn: "Our thoughts are with Dalo - we feel sorry for the guy. He has trained so hard and he is injured again. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery."

Vernon Philander, who took career-best figures of 6-42 in the Proteas' win, added: "I hope Dale gets back as quickly as possible - he is a hell of a champion and leader. It is heart-breaking for us to see him go down."

Seamers Duanne Olivier and Lungi Ngidi have been added to the Proteas' squad for the second Test at Centurion from Saturday.
